Administrative history

The Mechanical Technologies Division came into being officially on 1st January 1990, directed by G. Bachy.

In 1996, MT Division was renamed Engineering Support and Technologies Division (EST) and was restructured with an enlarged mandate to provide, for the whole of CERN, centralized engineering services and not only mechanical technologies.

Scope and content

This collection contains technical notes, reports, minutes of group leaders meetings, travel reports, files about management and personnel, organization, and projects concerning the Mechanical Technologies Division.

This Division brought together various mechanics groups from former accelerator Divisions and also took over the Workshops and Special Technologies groups that used to be in ST Division. This grouping aimed to provide more effective support to all CERN Divisions in terms of mechanical engineering and surface and materials technology as well as rationalizing and modernizing mechanical manufacturing facilities.

The MT Division was organized into functional units, each with its specific resources : engineering support, design offices, manufacturing facilities, surfaces and materials, computing support, installation support and administrative support. Parallel to that, a horizontal structure was responsible for the interface with the user Divisions and co-ordinated MT resources for large-scale projects (LHC, LEP200)
