Online resources available for CERN users during the COVID-19 epidemic

This page aims at listing all the published resources that are available for CERN Users even if they are working from outside CERN. Some of those resources are opened only during the epidemic, as a sign of good gesture from the publisher, this is indicated in the description. The others are the ones subscribed by the Library, they are also listed in the Library catalogue on CDS.

In addition to the list below, many other initiatives have been launched by publishers to help the academics and students during these difficult times, a complete list can be found here. 

Almost all the electronic resources provided by CERN Library are accessible from outside CERN, via EzProxy, you'll find the instructions here. Please note that the links below are already configured with EzProxy. 

ACM Digital Library (CERN account required)
Description: Access to all publications, including journals, conference proceedings, technical magazines and newsletters, published by ACM (Association of Computing Machinery). List available on CDS.

ACS Journals (CERN account required)
Description: Access to all journals published by ACS (American Chemical Society). List available on CDS.

AIP Journals (CERN account required)
Description: Access to all journals published by AIP (American Institute of Physics). List available on CDS.

Annual reviews Journals (No restriction, only during the COVID-19 epidemic till 30/04/2020)

APS Journals (CERN account required)
Description: Access to all journals published by APS (American Physical Society). List available on CDS.

ASM Handbooks Online (From outside CERN, only available via Remote Desktop)
Description: The ASM Handbook is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the structure, properties, processing, performance, and evaluation of metals and nonmetallic engineering materials.

Cambridge University Press ebooks and ejournals (CERN account required)
Description: Access to a selected list of ebooks and ejournals published by Cambridge University Press. List available on CDS.

Cambridge University Press textbooks (CERN account required, only during the COVID-19 epidemic, till 31/05/2020)
Description: Access to the full list of textbooks published by Cambridge University Press

Chicago Manual of Style (CERN account required)
Description: The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS or CMS) is a style guide for American English published since 1906 by the University of Chicago Press.

De Gruyter ebooks (CERN account required, only during the COVID-19 epidemic, till 30/06/2020)
Description: Digital access to thousands ebooks published by De Gruyter and publishing partners up to 2016. 

EDP Sciences journals (No restriction, only during the COVID-19 epidemic, till 30/06/2020)
Description: Access to all journals published by EDP Sciences for the years 2018-2020

Encyclopædia Britannica (CERN account required)
Description: The Encyclopædia Britannica is a general knowledge English-language encyclopaedia.

Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (CERN account required)
Description: Data reference book in Chemistry and Physics. 

IEEE Electronic Library (CERN account required)
Description: Online access to all IEEE and IET journals and magazines, IEEE and IET conference proceedings and approved and published IEEE standards. List available on CDS.

IOP Science (CERN account required)
Description: Online access to the full list of scientific journals published by the Institute of Physics (IOP) from 1874 until present. List available on CDS. Till end of June 2020, the access to the IOP ebooks is also fully open. 

JSTOR (CERN account required, only during the COVID-19 epidemic, till 31/12/2020)
Description: Access to all 2,000 journals from JSTOR collection. 

Le Bon Usage (CERN account required)
Description: Reference resource on French grammar

le Grand Robert (Only available via Remote Desktop)
Description: Online access to the well-known French dictionary Le Grand Robert

MIT Press ebooks (CERN account required, only during the COVID-19 epidemic, till 30/06/2020)
Description: Online access to all the MIT Press ebooks.

New Hart’s Rules: The Oxford Style Guide (CERN account required)
Description: Authority resource on style, helping writers and editors to prepare copy for publication.

New Oxford Dictionary for Scientific Writers & Editors (CERN account required)
Description: This dictionary provides scientists, science writers, and all who work in scientific publishing with a clear style guide for the presentation of scientific information.

New Oxford Dictionary for Writers & Editors (CERN account required)
Description: This specialist dictionary proves an essential guide to the written word, with thousands of brief informative entries to support your work, whether you are writing or editing.

Nucleonica (CERN account required)
Description: Nucleonica is a web portal developed for the worldwide nuclear science community. This resource replaces the traditional paper-based Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart.
Access restriction: CERN account required. In order to benefit from this resource, you can register for a basic account here using your CERN email address and your account will be automatically upgraded to Premium.

O'Reilly Learning platform (CERN account required)
Description: This platform includes a majority of the ebooks previously available on the Proquest Safari platform and a large number of videos, trainings and audiobooks, mainly in IT, but also in other domains such as management and communication. 

Oxford Dictionaries Pro (CERN account required)
Description: These English language reference works are popular and reliable resources that provide expert recommendations on grammar, spelling, and usage; essential guides to the written word; and specialist dictionaries for writers, editors, proofreaders, and other professionals.

Oxford English Dictionary (CERN account required)
Description: The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language.

Oxford Journals (CERN account required)
Description: Access to a selection of journals published by Oxford University Press. List available on CDS.

Oxford Reference Online (CERN account required)
Description: Oxford Reference is the premier online reference product, spanning 25 different subject areas, bringing together 2 million digitized entries across Oxford University Press’s Dictionaries, Companions and Encyclopedias.

Oxford Scholarship Online (CERN account required)
Description: Oxford Scholarship Online (OSO) is a digital library, providing access to thousands of books published by Oxford University Press (OUP). At CERN, the access is focused on the books published in Physics. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the access includes also books in Mathematics (till 31/12/2020).

ScienceDirect (CERN account required)
Description: ScienceDirect is the online platform giving access to the electronic journals, books and conference proceedings published by Elsevier, Pergamon Press or Academic Press. At CERN, the access is only available for selected titles. During the COVID-19 epidemic, there is an access to a large number of ebooks in Mathematics and Physics. For some of the journals, the access covers also the backfiles, including the earliest years of the publication. Some open access content can also be found on ScienceDirect. List available on CDS.

Description: Access to a selection of journals published by Springer and the full collection of ebooks in Physics and Astronomy and Mathematics, and a subset of the collection in Engineering. List available on CDS

Very short introductions (CERN account required, only during the COVID-19 epidemic, till 31/12/2020)
Description: Access to the full list of titles of this collection, published by Oxford University Press, which offers concise introductions to a diverse range of subjects.

Wiley Online Library (CERN account required)
Description: Access to some selected journals and ebooks published by Wiley. List available on CDS

World Scientific (CERN account required)
Description: Access to all electronic journals as from 2001 (only during the COVID-19 epidemic, till 30/06/2020), and selected books and conference proceedings published by World Scientific. List available on CDS.

Zentralblatt für Mathematik (CERN account required)
Description: Zentralblatt MATH is the most complete and longest running abstracting and reviewing service in pure and applied mathematics in the world. This covers the years from 1931 to present.
