Remote access to e-resources
You can access our electronic resources (e-books, journals, etc.) even when you are not at CERN. See how to use and configure remote access to our e-resources with the options below.
EzProxy URL
In order to access online resources made available by the Library from outside CERN:
- URLs must be prefixed by: https://ezproxy.cern.ch/login?url=
- When you access the resources via the EzProxy, you need to login with your CERN credentials.

The CERN Library Catalogue and website
URLs of resources listed in the CERN Library Catalogue or on this website are correctly formatted with the EzProxy prefix:
Bookmarklet
To simplify access, we advise you to install a bookmarklet (working on all browsers: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer). The bookmarklet should be installed only once. (Javascript needs to be enabled in your browser’s configuration).
- Create a new bookmark:
– with the name: CERN Library proxy
– and the URL: javascript:void(location.href=’https://ezproxy.cern.ch/login?url=’+location.href); (make sure to copy the full URL) - Go to the article or the e-book you need to access from any Google search or any other web site.
- Click on the ‘CERN Library proxy’ bookmark you created.
- You will be prompted to enter your CERN credentials. This will reload the page, and you will be able to access the resource.
Zotero
If you use the Zotero extension on Firefox, no configuration is necessary. The first time you type in the EzProxy version of the URL, Zotero will remember to use it each time you visit the website. However, you will need to type it in for each new resource you access.
Browser extensions
These extensions enable you to convert any resource link to the EzProxy URL:
- EzProxy Redirect Foxified (Firefox)
- EzProxy Redirect (Google Chrome)
Useful information
- This service works for CERN computer accounts only.
- The access will only work if the CERN Library has a subscription to the resource. Please check the availability in the CERN Library Catalogue or in our online resources.
- Please note that URLs prefixed with EzProxy work whether you are located at CERN or accessing remotely.
- No authentification is needed for open access resources.
- There is a small list of publishers for which the EzProxy doesn’t work: Grand Robert, SIF journals. If you need to access this online content remotely, please use the Windows Terminal Services or open a browser on LXPLUS.

EzProxy is the main method to remotely access the Library online resources, however, for some publishers, there are other ways:
CASA Google Scholar
CASA (Campus Activated Subscriber Access) is a remote access extension of Google Scholar’s Subscriber Link Program. It provides off-campus users with one-click access to all their institutional subscriptions directly through Google Scholar search results.
This service works for subscribed content (e-journals and e-books) from main publishers such as ACS, AOP, ACM Digital Library, APS, Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Springer, IOP, World Scientific Publishing.
How to use it?
From a CERN IP, visit Google Scholar and find an article. If CERN has access to this article, it will show the link to the full content on the publisher’s website. Google Scholar records the affiliation between your device (laptop, mobile phone, desktop, etc.) and your institution.
The next time you use the same device to visit Google Scholar from off-campus, Google Scholar will remember the affiliation from the first visit and access the publisher’s website as if you were on a CERN IP.
The off-campus access is valid for a period that varies from 30 to 120 days depending on the publisher, and can be later renewed by simply visiting Google Scholar from a CERN IP.
Extended access
Some publishers offer extended access to their content: you have continued access after leaving, the institution’s IP address ranges, depending on the publisher the connection hours also differ.
How to use it?
- You have to work from the same device and browser (in and out of campus).
- Cookies are enabled.
- In this context, there is no need to use EzProxy.
For the time being, the publishers who offer this possibility are:
- Elsevier (ScienceDirect) for up to 48 hours.
- American Chemical Society (ACS) for up to 4 months by pairing your account, you can follow the publishers instructions here.
- Wiley Online Library for up to 60 days.
- Springer provides “Persisted authentication” up to 180 days after users’ last institutional access.

ACM Digital Library:
Access by clicking on “Institutional Login” → Select your institution → Fill in your username and password by following the instructions.
ACS:
Access by clicking on “Find my Institution” → Search and select “CERN” → Fill in your username and password by following the instructions.
AIP:
Access by clicking on “Sign In” → Sign in via your institution → Select Federation “Swiss Higher Education (SWITCHaai) → Select your Institution “CERN” → Fill in your username and password by following the given instructions.
Annual Reviews:
Access by clicking on “Institutional Login”→ Find your institution → Fill in your username and password by following the given instructions.
APS:
Access by searching the article you are interested in (not applicable in an open access article/ free articles) → Click on PDF → Select “Log in via your institution” by clicking on “OpenAthens Login” → Search and select “CERN” → Fill in your username and password by following the instructions.
Cambridge University Press:
Access by clicking on “Login” → Access through your institution (search the institution to the provided field) → Fill in with your institutional username and password, by following the instructions.
Elsevier:
Access by clicking on “Sign In” → Sign in via “Institution” → Select “Access through CERN services provider” → Fill in your institutional username and password, by following the instructions.
IEEE:
In order to access content, you should visit IEEE Xplore → Click on “Institutional Sign In” → Select “Access through your Institution” → Search and select “CERN” → Fill in your username and your password by following the instructions.
IOP:
Access by searching the article/ book you are interested in (not applicable in an open access article/ free articles) → Click on PDF → Select “Access through your institution” → Search and select “CERN” → Fill in your username and password by following the instructions.
JSTOR:
Access by clicking on “Login” → Access through your institution → Search and select “CERN” → Fill in your institutional username and password.
Nature:
Search for the article you are interested in → Select the title and click on “Access through your institution” → Search and select “CERN” → Fill in your institutional username and password by following the instructions.
Oxford University Press:
Access by clicking on “Institutional Access” → Sign in through your institution → Find and select your organization/ institution “CERN” → Fill in with your institutional username and password.
Scientific.net:
Access by clicking on login → Choose “Access through your institution” → Search for and select “CERN” → Add your institutional username and password, by following the instructions.
Springer:
Access by clicking on “Sign up/ Login” → Access via institution → Search and select “CERN” → Fill in your institutional username and password.
Taylor & Francis:
Access by clicking on “Find my institution” → Select my institution via Federation: Swiss Higher Education (SWITCHaai) → CERN. Fill in your institutional username and password, by following the instructions.
Wiley Online Library:
Access by clicking on “Login/ Register” → Select Institutional Login OR Search by Institution (CERN) / Federation (Swiss Higher Education (SWITCHaai) → Fill in with your institutional username and password.
