Name of creator
Horst Wenninger studied at the University of Heidelberg from 1958 to 1966 where he obtained his diploma in physics in 1962 and his doctorate in 1966.
Still working for the Institute for High Energy Physics of the University of Heidelberg, as an assistant, Horst collaborated with CERN bubble chambers experiments.
He joined CERN in 1968 as a member of a team advising the engineering groups set up for the construction of BEBC (Big European Bubble Chamber) on physics aspects for this detector.
In 1974, when the SPS started up for physics, he became physics co-ordinator for the BEBC programme.
In 1980, he went to DESY to work on electron-positron collider physics in connection with the LEP project then under discussion at CERN. At DESY he participated in the construction of the ARGUS central detector and joined the JADE collaboration.
He returned to CERN in 1982 as leader of the BEBC group.
In 1984, he was appointed as leader of the Experimental Physics Facilities division (EF). This division provided support for large experimental facilities like the OMEGA spectrometer, UA1 and UA2 experiments and the neutrino beams and for LEP detectors.
In 1990 he became leader of the Accelerator Technologies (AT) Division. During this time AT division included the major technology groups working on the LEP2 energy upgrade programme while continuing R&D on superconducting magnets and preparing for the future requirements for LHC-specific technologies e.g. cryogenics and vacuum.
In 1993, he worked on the LHC project preparation as Deputy Project Leader and from 1994 to 1999 he was Research and Technical Director.
In 2000, he helped launch the Technology Transfer (TT) division and served as Chairperson of the CERN Technology Advisory Board (TAB). He was also Convenor of the Risk Management Group for LHC machines and areas, and a member of the coordination group of the EIROForum, a collaboration between seven European scientific research organisations to promote the quality and impact of European research.
He retired from CERN in 2003.
