Felix Bloch (1905 - 1983)

Born in Switzerland, he emigrated to USA in 1935. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1952 for his work on nuclear induction. He became CERN's first Director-General from October 1954 until August 1955 when he relinquished his duties as Director-General to Cornelis Jan Bakker in order to concentrate fully on his scientific work in the USA.
